Do you feel like the list of foods you can eat is shrinking by the day?
You may have found a few select foods that you can eat without issues, but as soon as you stray slightly off track from these foods you get set back for days. Or perhaps new foods keep cropping up that weren’t there before, for example, maybe you are normally fine with apples but then suddenly you’re not fine.
So why is this happening?
There are many pieces to this puzzle. In this blog, I will be focusing on how the food you eat is either your best friend or worst enemy.
We are all individual humans, with different genetics, biochemistry and thought patterns. Whilst there are some similarities between us, when it comes to food, we all have certain foods that our body just won’t tolerate.
When you consume a food that your body doesn’t tolerate well or can’t digest properly, for example, wheat, for the body this is a bit like someone is rubbing a rusty nail against your insides. It creates inflammation in the gut which damages the intestinal wall, eventually penetrating it. This also throws the gut bacteria out of balance, called dysbiosis, which causes further harmful effects to the body.
Now you can imagine if someone is rubbing a rusty nail against your insides, it’s going to be quite sensitive. This is when many other foods are also going to start causing problems because at this point, your body can’t handle what it usually could.
I have experienced this first-hand. When I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, I cut out gluten immediately, but I didn’t realise that there were also other foods I couldn’t tolerate. Also, my gut had been so damaged from consuming gluten for 23 years that my body needed a very specific diet at that time to be able to heal. It was a few years before I finally discovered this through my studies (I was never able to get an answer anywhere else).
The good news is that we all have this incredible ability to heal given the right environment. Once you work out which specific foods are rubbing the rusty nail and remove them, your body will repair.
One recent success story in this area is a young boy I worked with who had severe eczema. He was very ill, and his parents had tried everything including hospital visits and various specialist teams. He had recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease, and we did bio-compatibility testing to work out which foods were incompatible with his body. The amazing thing was that as soon as these foods were removed, the eczema settled down, he was able to go back to school and his quality of life was so much better.
This is a prime example of food being your best friend or worst nightmare. Once you get the diet right, everything else will start to fall into place.
