Do you rely on Buscopan, Immodium, Nexium, colonics or laxatives?
These medications can be a real lifesaver when your gut is playing up and you have to get on with your life – exams, work, holidays etc. But if you’re taking them every day, it means that the core issue isn’t being addressed.
Doctors are trained in medicine. These medications are their medicine. If you go and see a doctor with gut pain, they’ll give you something to take away the gut pain.
But this is a band-aid solution – it doesn’t actually correct the problem, which means that as soon as you stop taking the medication, the pain will come back.
Medication comes charging through the body like an axe, looking for its target (the receptor). It locks onto its target in the cell and has the desired effect – for example, pain relief. But this change in the cell creates other changes in the body as well. That’s why there are side effects of every medication.
For example, Metformin for diabetes forces your cells to accept more glucose so that the glucose gets out of the bloodstream. But then what happens to the poor cell? It’s got to do something with all the extra glucose, and it will usually turn it into fat. Proton pump inhibitors (Nexium) prevent the stomach from making stomach acid. But without enough stomach acid, we don’t break down food properly (leading to more gut symptoms) and are susceptible to infections like H. pylori and SIBO.
The long-term safety of many medications isn’t known – they haven’t been around long enough. What we do know is, medication has a negative impact on the gut microbiome. It changes the balance of bacteria which means less diversity (critical for a healthy gut) and less beneficial bacteria (critical for protection and total body health). This isn’t going to fix the problem long-term.
When you rely on medication, it makes you form a belief that you have to keep relying on it.
This makes sense, because most likely when you don’t take it, things get worse.
But that’s only because you haven’t been told how to correct the core issue. You haven’t been told that there’s another way. You haven’t been shown how to look at the body holistically, as one moving part, the mind and body integrated together.
The body is incredibly intelligent and complex. Given the right fuel (nutrients), the right environment (fixing the gut), and the right physiological state (balancing the nervous system), it will activate its natural healing mechanisms and will work very quickly to correct what has gone wrong.
You body simply can’t heal when the gut is inflamed, it’s being fed the wrong fuel and the nervous system is a wreck. In this state, your body is simply trying to stay alive, it can’t consider the possibility of thriving!
We’ve all heard those stories of people who were told they’ll never walk again. You are no different – you have just as much capacity as they do.
I truly believe that we all have the power to do incredible things with our health – we just need the right guidance and our body will do the rest.
